The Richard M. Keane Foundation was established in 2001 to create a 9/11 Memorial Sports Center in the Wethersfield Community. Richard Keane and two other Wethersfield men, Jeffrey Bittner and David Winton all died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001. A fourth family who lost their father, Fred Kuo, on 9/11 now lives in Wethersfield. A Sports Center in their memory is a positive and wonderful way to commemorate life’s happy events, as well as to remember lives lost.
The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a safe and fun environment where youth come together to participate in athletic, academic, and social programs with the support and guidance of caring adults.
Currently, Keane on Kids After School Enrichment Programs are held at 5 Elementary Schools and the Middle School. Students can choose from a variety of enrichment activities, to learn a new skill or to advance their knowledge of a particular area, like Chess, Cooking, Fashion Design, Athletics, Science/Stem, Financial Resiliance and many more.
Now in existence for Twenty Years, we enjoy widespread support from Wethersfield residents, community leaders and area businesses. The Keane Foundation has been recognized and honored by the Wethersfield Town Council, the Wethersfield Board of Education, the Wethersfield Chamber of Commerce, as well as local civic and business groups, for community leadership in providing quality programming for children and their families.
The Vision of the Richard M. Keane Foundation is to continue to provide the greater Wethersfield community with a safe and nurturing environment for athletics, academic and enrichment programs through a public/private collaboration.
