The 9/11 Memorial Sports Center, located within the Pitkin Community Center, 30 Greenfield Street, is now open.
Overall:
The Sports Center includes a newly renovated gymnasium and fitness room with exercise bikes, treadmills, and elliptical trainers, as well as a meeting room; all equipped with wireless internet access! Two pieces of steel recovered from the world trade center have been mounted for display, one outside the sports center's entrance and another inside the gymnasium.
Starting this Week, 9/22/2008:
The gym is supervised and open to the public on Mondays and Tuesdays after school from 2:45 to 5pm for Wethersfield students to come in and play. There will be no fee for the months of September and October, courtesy of the Keane Foundation. Just come in and sign in on the daily log sheet and have some fun. No outside basketballs will be allowed in the gym, but don't worry-we have plenty here!
In the Future:
There will be expanded after school programming including homework help, wireless laptops to use in the meeting room, and use of the fitness room’s equipment! Registration information and fees will be available in late October.
The Gym:
The gym will be open from 8 - 8:45 am starting this week for anyone who wishes to do some early morning walking at no cost. Stop into the main office to sign in first, and enjoy your walk. The rubberized surface is very gentle on the joints and there's no weather worries as you lap around the gym floor! Just remember to wear sneakers and clean off your shoes before entering!
Fitness Room:
Open Hours will be posted in October. To use the machines, you must register for and attend a "Fitness Room 101" class led by one of our fitness instructors; after that, you will have fitness room membership for the balance of 2008. (Membership renewals will take place in January for 2009. Fitness Room 101 class dates and registration fee are to be determined.
