Running Clubs made for a “Funtastic” 5K!

running-clubsA new endeavor by the Keane Foundation brought Running Clubs to all 5 Wethersfield Elementary Schools for children in Grades 3-6. In collaboration with the Parks and Recreations Department and with an ACHIEVE Grant, this program encouraged children of all running abilities to develop their Running Skills from their previous level of ability to completing the 5K (3.1 miles).

The program taught children how to develop their endurance, set goals, and promote self-esteem. Children of all running abilities progressed from their current level to completing a 5K (3.1 miles). With Running Club participants and their friends and families, there were 410 registered runners in this year’s 5K....a new record!

This fall’s Running Club participants will prepare for the Mikey’s Place 5K on October 18th

Sign up early as the program will start the second week of school!

What’s happening at the After School Program?

Come join the fun after school on Mondays and Tuesdays starting October 26th, running until December 16th. The Fall program, supported by the Keane Foundation and the Parks and Recreation Department, always leave kids and parents wanting more!
This past year children participated in Campardy (like Jeopardy, including stage and buzzers to signal that they have the answer); CT Science Center programs; and Zumba exercise classes. Even more interesting enrichment activities are planned for this year!

Children in grades 3-6 from all 5 Elementary Schools in Wethersfield can register to be transported by bus to the 9/11 Memorial Sports Center After School Program. Those who enroll in the Keane On Kids Fall After School Program, can start their homework, have a snack and spend hours of fun in the Gym, Fitness Center and on Computers in the Classroom.

The supervised program will include Homework Help, Computer Games and SmartBoard play and instruction, as well as Sports, Fitness Programs and Open Gym.
